Hey business owners and random internet purveyors, my name is Jason, and here is a little bit of info about me:
Molded by the small, rural town I grew up in and all the opportunity it offered - none - I knew from a young age that to succeed in this world I would have to follow a less comfortable path.
By 8 I was selling and trading hockey cards, meticulous in my approach to ensure that my classmates always thought they were getting the best deal (they weren't). I didn't know it at the time but this was my introduction to the world of negotiation tactics, pitching and offer creation.
At 12, my obsession with skateboarding led me to my next entrepreneurial venture -- bottle collecting. My friend and I would hit up every single door in the neighborhood. But soon we realized we could be skateboarding instead of bottle collecting if we could outsource the labor (not the term we used), so we convinced our non-skateboarder friend to do the collecting for us and we'd return the bottles for a cut. We did this for a few weeks until our friend realized it was a terrible deal for him and the whole scheme fell apart.
I was obsessed with sports in my teen years, skateboarding, snowboarding and soccer; as well as theatre. I was a shy kid, but these outlets gave me strength and confidence and are a large reason why I have seen success thus far in my life.
When I was 18 I left home and traveled, including living in China for a few years where I learned Mandarin, and more importantly, learned some of the most important lessons of my life, like resilience, adaptability, and how to not die in motorbike accidents.
When I returned home, I went back to university to finish my Political Science degree because I thought it was the "right thing to do", but in reality it was the easy thing to do and what I felt pressured to do.
So even after I got a decent job out of uni, I felt a rekindling for entrepreneurship, and started a number of failing companies, like a communications consulting company, Speed Renting (a rental matchmaking service) and Briefed Media, a local blog and newsletter, before local blogs and newsletters were cool.
But these largely accidental experiences gave me the foundation for many of the marketing skills I still employ today, and was the start of my marketing career because when they failed, I needed money and a job and found myself working in B2B software of all places.
It was a great industry to learn in because if you can do B2B software SEO you can do anything.
Eventually, I moved over to the consumer space working at start-ups like Kit & Ace and then Plenty Of Fish, running their SEO and global advertising before realizing that I could provide a much bigger impact by consulting.
And so I took the leap and haven't looked back since. Over the last four years I've had the pleasure of working with a range of start-ups and small businesses across almost every imaginable niche including B2B, B2C, DTC, apps, SaaS, home services, finance, real estate, dating, food & beverage, and many others.
My goal is simple: help business grow profitably using direct response advertising and growth marketing that stands the test of time.
